A “value stream” represents all the actions that are currently required to bring a product or service through its main process steps and transform it from its original or raw material state into the specifications required by the customer. This may be a process flow of a product or service from raw material through to customer acceptance or the process of taking a new product design from concept to product launch.
The purpose of the value stream map (VSM) is to look at the big picture of how the product or service is currently being produced in order to create a “future-state” map as all non-value added activities are eliminated as all non-value-added but required activities are minimized.
